ONE GAME CHANGER: AYISHE MOLEFE, THE PIONEER OF BW YOUTUBE

You cannot chat about YouTube in BW and not mention Ayishe M.  Ayishe Molefe, through her journey of discovery has established herself as a force to be reckoned with. When most people were still exploring other platforms, she had already started uploading content on the video sharing platform hence it is fair enough for us to call her the PIONEER OF BW YOUTUBE right?

To kick-start our ONE GAME CHANGER series, we caught up with her. She’s one young lady who’s worth looking out for in the content creation space. Here’s what she had to say

OSO: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY INTO YOUTUBE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL?

Ayishe: My journey into YouTube started beginning of 2018. One day I just woke up and I decided to finally start my channel because I had been thinking about it for the longest time. I was watching a lot of South African You tubers and I said you know what LENNA I want to give this a try.

OSO: WHAT DOES YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL COVER?

Ayishe: First and foremost it covers beauty. I like makeup, skin care. It also covers lifestyle. How I try to navigate through my life.

OSO: YOUR CONTENT IS QUITE VARIED; IT’S NOT JUST ONE SPECIFIC THING. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE DECISION IN TERMS OF THE KIND OF CONTENT THAT YOU WERE GOING TO CREATE?

Ayishe: Any other Content Creator creates content on things they relate to. So it has to be something you love and are able to talk about for a long time. That’s how I decided

OSO: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE NICHE OUT OF ALL THOSE YOU COVER AND WHY?

Ayishe: Agh!!! I don’t have a favourite, I think I love BEAUTY but people don’t love it as much as I love it so I don’t have a favourite. So for me it’s mostly beauty and lifestyle. A lil bit of fashion, books but for me my favourite is the lifestyle VLOGS.

OSO: WHAT ARE SOME BIG WINS AND CHALLENGES YOU’VE HAD WHILE GROWING YOUR BRAND?

Ayishe: Biggest WIN is being a Brand Ambassador for Glam Gals. I was a Brand Ambassador for about a year and that helped grow my brand.

Biggest CHALLENGE is working with other brands and monetising my channel. So far… I’m not gonna pretend, I haven’t been able to work with a brand that has paid

OSO: ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START A YOUTUBE CHANNEL?

Ayishe: Pick something you love and talk about it. Create content on it. It has to be something you like otherwise wa go helelwa ke content.

OSO: WHAT’S THE COOLEST VIDEO YOU’VE EVER MADE?

Ayishe: My birthday series. That was a fun collaboration

OSO: YOU ARE CURRENTLY SITTING ON OVER 2K SUBSCRIBERS, IN BOTSWANA, HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE THIS AND GROW YOUR CHANNEL?

Ayishe: I have been consistent. People who know my channel, who know me as a Youtuber…my brand is closely associated with consistency. And I have invested in my content, if you see my first video and my current video, there’s a difference in the quality.

OSO: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY SETS YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL APART?

Ayishe: First of all I am one of the very few first people in Botswana who were into YouTube. Secondly my personality and consistency. People feel that I am relatable, very raw and am myself. People can identify with that.

OSO: WHAT DOES YOUR CHANNEL MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY?

Ayishe: My channel is my form of expression, my dream, and my stepping stone. It’s one thing in my life on how I can be myself. It’s the one thing I’ve been able to do and enjoy and not quit on. I’ve tried a lot of things. I’ve tried singing, dancing, writing a blog but my channel has kept me going.

OSO: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUTUBE IN BOTSWANA?

Ayishe: I don’t know. I don’t think about the future of YouTube as a whole because I am still trynna navigate around it myself. But it is growing. Hopefully, umm, Google will recognise it soon and we will be able to be paid through YouTube itself

OSO: DO YOU THINK IT IS SUSTAINABLE?

Ayishe: Right now, it’s not. Maybe in the next 5 years it will be, you never know

OSO: WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

Ayishe: Be yourself and work on improving yourself for yourself

OSO: WHO ARE YOUR ALL TIME ROLE MODELS?

Ayishe: {GIGGLES} I don’t have an all-time role model because they always changing. But most constant ones recently has been Sibu Mpanza, he’s a Youtuber as well, South African Youtuber. My Mum of course but for personal reasons and another Youtuber, Siphokazi William. She has overcome so much. And ummm, I think Bonang Matheba recently ever since I’ve started watching Being Bonang. I see how she has become a brand more. And umm, Trevor Noah

OSO: WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU WANT TO GET INTO WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? HAS YOUTUBE ALWAYS BEEN AN OPTION?

Ayishe: A Lawyer, then a Writer, I still want to be a Writer. Then I wanted to be a Finance person {LOL} then I wanted to be a Clinical Psychologist. But the more, according to my degree, the more I realise that, that is not for me.

OSO: THE TERM ‘DIGITAL ENTREPRENEUR’ IS ONE THAT IS OFTEN USED BY DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS AS OF LATE. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT A DIGITAL ENTREPRENEUR IS AND WHAT THEY DO?

Ayishe: Basically like old time media personalities except that we do on a digital space. On Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, through Blogging and stuff like that.

OSO: WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY?

Ayishe: Right now, Bonang Matheba. Trevor Noah, through how he has grown from a Comedian to a whole force. He’s an Author now, he presents the daily show, and he has worked with Oprah.

In Botswana, it is Tumie Nthutang, Rea Kopi and who else in Botswana…I think also NdeUyapo, I love his content, he is a Travel & Fashion Blogger.

In South Africa, apart from Bonang and Trevor, it is Sibu Mpanza, Siphokazi William and Thandi Gama.

Yah those are my influences right now

OSO: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOU?

Ayishe: I don’t know, I really don’t know what people think of me apart from what they tell me… But I think, right now it is that I have money. I am BROKE guys, ke ngwana hela, ga kena madi…

In terms of my personality, I think people think I am stronger than I actually am but I don’t know. Le tla mpolella

OSO: WHAT’S THE GREATEST FEAR YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Ayishe: I think having nothing to fall back on.

OSO: WHAT WOULD YOU EVER NOT DO AGAIN IN THE NAME OF YOUTUBE?

Ayishe: Nothing, I think my channel is where it is now because I feel like it. I don’t do things for clout on Youtube. My brand is also just beyond doing things for views and to go viral. My channel is my truth. So I don’t think there’s anything I will give up or never do again on YouTube

OSO: WHAT FUTURE ENDEAVOURS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED?

Ayishe: I am always very sceptical about answering this question. You know how they say about how when you are busy making plans, God is always watching and laughing, so yah. But in terms of my plans, I plan on growing my brand beyond just YouTube. One of my plans is to become a TV Presenter so I am praying and seeing how I can get my foot in that as well. Umm yeah! That’s basically it.
